    LOOKING BACK (2)

      There are some questions:

The priest decided to be a priest after he lost his pet dog. The dog was "the first living creature I had ever loved passionately, because he returned my affection." When a priest should love others without expecting anything in return, is his character adequate as a priest?

At the end of the story, the Comtesse thinks "of many things that do not occur to the young." What did she think about?

What does the priest think of his parents now? Does he accept them as they were?

The Comtesse is a devoted grandmother. She says she "could never have endured the sorrow with which I come into contact everyday had it been my own [grandchildren]." This makes a good contrast with the priest's attitude toward family, but also shows her weakness. What did the author intend to tell the readers through the two persons' contrast and similarities?

      LOOKING BACK

"Looking Back" written by Guy de Maupassant, translated by H. N. P. Sloman

This is a talk between the Comtesse, a grandmother of two girls and a boy, and the Abbe Mauduit, or the Cure.

        Question about the language:
The Cure is very generous. "He would have divided his cloak like Saint Martin."... What does this mean?
        Here's the answer.
Saint Martin of Tours, (Savaria, Pannonia {now Szombathely, Hungary}, 316 – November 8, 397 in Candes-Saint-Martin, Gaul {central France}; buried November 11, 397, Candes, Gaul) was a Bishop of Tours whose shrine became a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela.
While Martin was still a soldier at Amiens he experienced the vision that became the most-repeated story about his life. He was at the gates of the city of Amiens with his soldiers when he met a scantily dressed beggar. He impulsively cut his own military cloak in half and shared it with the beggar. That night he dreamed of Jesus wearing the half-cloak Martin had given away. He heard Jesus say to the angels: "Here is Martin, the Roman soldier who is not baptised; he has clad me." (Sulpicius, ch 2). In another story, when Martin woke his cloak was restored, and the miraculous cloak was preserved among the relic collection of the Merovingian kings of the Franks.
